Totally great, but get another backup! July 23, 2010 Jamie Sanford (NJ, USA) I have this drive and everything has been totally fine. It's in and out of my bag all of the time, it doesn't get used all that much but hasn't failed me at all.
I did want to take the chance to remind people that if you buy one external storage device, you should probably buy another to back it up in case of failure. I am going through a tough time with getting data from another external hard drive that failed, and I want to spread the word so that hopefully less people will have to go through this sort of thing. It's expensive and worrisome!
Iomega have saddled buyers with flawed software June 25, 2010 Rogreb (NY) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Drive may work fine but the Retrospect it comes bundled with does not. It worked for a while or appeared to, then I got the following message
Updating status..." 0 Restore Points available. Multiple reboots later nothing changed. So I started googling and found many others with the same problem.
I emailed iomega tech support and ended up with the following message and no further help..
"EMC recently sold Retrospect to Sonic Solutions. While Iomega will continue to provide Retrospect Express HD and Retrospect Express to our customer free of charge, all support is now handled by Sonic."
Sonic charge for their tech support. Iomega have really dropped the ball on this one. I bought my drive in Feb 2010 and now have the annoying task of finding out how to remove Retrospect and looking for an alternative system or backing up manually.
So choose something else, there are many good alternatives out there.
Good for the pocket and usefulness! June 25, 2010 Parker Hallam (Dallas, TX) The reason I bought the Iomega Prestige 320 GB Portable Hard Drive is that I needed to take with me all the important work files on my official trips. The 320 GB would suffice my needs and I have 500 GB version that is stationed at my office all the time. I don't use this drive for regular back up and store only documents required for the trip. Apart from documents, I also store a few hundred songs so that I get to relax when I find time.
There is no need for an external power supply to get this drive to work and the design is really elegant. The USB connectivity is a real benefit. The software for this device is available on download but I don't require it. Back up software works perfect. I like the aluminum cover and the fact that it does not have a glossy finish. My cousin complains that his HD's USB cable keeps coming off on a slightest move, I am glad that mine stays intact. And I really like the cost of this device... very affordable.
Compact, dropshock absorption, energy efficiency - worthier than expected June 15, 2010 Roy Wiegmann (Dallas, TX) Being a portable drive I need not mention about the Prestige 500 GB 34169 size. So compact that it fits well into my cardigan pockets! I store my most important legal data on this device and leave it in my safe box.
According to me, extreme temperatures and careless handling will cause immense damage to the drive. Power supply is through the USB interface. requires no external power source and the plug n play mode is what I like the most. After all gads are to make life easier! The drop shock technology is a welcome aspect for frequent traveling. This way I could pull it through easier despite drop within a couple of meters, this I know because it did fall off my hands and I assumed that some chunk of data loss could have happened. But I was pleasantly surprised bcoz nothing as such happened.
Any star rating to prove that some level of energy efficiency is possible is welcome. Power adapter carries this message. And that's another relief factor. Casing is also sturdy. Checked for the storage space and was a little disappointed that it contained only 475 GB.
User friendly, gets the job done May 7, 2010 B. Inmn (Ashland, VA USA) Short of purchasing a device that does automatic back ups, this is an excellent user-friendly product. Easy to use with my iBook G4, plenty of space.
