5 out of 5 stars It really is painless!   September 10, 2010

I was expecting it to still hurt like crazy when I used it, but it didn't hurt at all and got rid of the hair. It takes a few passes to get it all but it's better then shaving. Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Product + Tips for First Time / Apprehensive Users   September 10, 2010
Asher
Though this is the first time I've used this specific product, I've been using Braun Epilators for several years. Due to extremely sensitive skin, shaving gives me hives (how I wish it were only razor burn), depilatory creams burn my skin raw, and while waxing offered a perfect alternative it could be costly and I did not care for the amount of regrowth needed before another session. I discovered epilators at eighteen (I'm now twenty-seven), and they've more than fulfilled my grooming requirements.

Braun has always been my preferred brand, thanks to excellent craftsmanship and wonderful customer service. Beautifully made and durable, they last for years (if taken care of) and are more then able to handle the occasional drop. Efficient and gentle, they remove hair without tugging and tearing the skin. This particular model is probably best for beginners, allowing the user to ease into epilation, while still offering long-time users the performance they require.

For those new to this form of depilation, or those with extremely sensitive skin, there are a few tricks to make the experience far less uncomfortable:

1. Take the recommended dose of ibuprofen or acetaminophen sixty to ninety minutes before epilation. A small glass of wine or preferred alcoholic beverage can also be helpful for calming nerves and allowing you to relax - tension will make things far more painful than need be.

2. Shave or wax the area you intend to epilate. I do not recommend the use of depilatory creams.

3. Take a warm shower or bath, making sure skin is clean and free of oil and residue. Dry thoroughly. Warm pores are open pores, which means hair is softer and much easier to remove. Keeping skin warm through the process is key. Bath towels left to tumble in the dryer for a little while and then pressed to skin, or warm water repeatedly applied to skin and quickly dried both do the trick. My preferred method is the use of a hair dryer. A quick blast to skin, held at a safe distance, keeps skin warm and dry, and the pores open, and requires little effort.

4. Use the epilator of clean, warm, freshly depilated skin. You will not remove small, fine hair when first using the Massaging Rollers Clip. Leave that for later. Though it will take longer, move the epilator in the direction of hair growth the first few times you use it. This will cut down on discomfort dramatically. If your skin is smooth, you should feel only the occasional tug of a stray hair. You may not even feel that.

5. Using a loofah, a natural bristle body brush, a dry washcloth, or your preferred body scrub, exfoliate skin thoroughly. Oftentimes, after all forms of hair removal, small pieces of hair are trapped under dead skin (even if you exfoliate often) and can lead to a shadowy appearance, stubbly feel, and if left unchecked, irritation. This will also avoid ingrown hairs in the future. (I personally recommend the use of a loofah or natural bristle body brush above all else, but this is a matter of preference. If you want to maximize benefits, look into Dry Skin Brushing. If you self-tan, keep in mind your tan will fade somewhat faster than normal with this method.) Remember to be gentle! You want to ease your skin into the process.

6. Apply a soothing cream. This really depends upon preference, but there are many wonderful lotions and oils that will help you maintain your smooth skin. Organic (also known as Golden) Jojoba Oil is beautifully moisturizing, hypoallergenic, and known for keeping pores and hair follicles open and clear, resulting in a reduction of acne, keratosis pilaris, and ingrown hairs. Unrefined Virgin Coconut Oil and Unrefined African Shea Butter are also known to be helpful. Many have success with products such as Tend Skin or GiGi No Bump Rx Skin Treatment, though these are not recommended for women that are pregnant or nursing.

In fighting ingrown hairs and getting the most from your epilating sessions, dedication, exfoliation, gentleness, and moisturization are key.

Depending on your skin, you may experience small red bumps after hair removal, resembling razor burn or small pimples. This should fade within twenty minutes to two hours. Small drops of blood appearing on the skin after tweezing, waxing or epilating are very common, and can be treated with a simple antibacterial cream. Antihistamine creams are also useful for any lasting itch or redness, though this is uncommon.

7. Take special care around raised moles and scars, as these areas will be far more sensitive.

8. Repeat this process every day (or every other day, if need be) for a approximately a month.

9. If you've followed steps 1 - 8 carefully, you should now be ready to use the EfficiencyPro Clip, and epilate in the opposite direction of hair growth. You should ease into this the first few times, but at this point hair growth should be much thinner, skin well exfoliated, and, let's face it, much like waxing you simply get used to the sensation. All of which results in a speedy, efficient, painless experience. (Mostly painless - you may still feel the occasional tug, but this should be no worse than tweezing a single hair.)

Remember to clean your epilator well. Use the included brush after every use. Grain alcohol on a cotton swab or an antibacterial wipe should follow, and not only will this guard your health and wellbeing, but ensure your epilator is in tip top shape for many years to come.

Areas of use really depend upon preference, though I do not recommend using to shape eyebrows or sculpt hairline. Even a full Brazilian wax (also known as Hollywood wax) is possible with time, patience, and care.

Hopefully this aids any eager new users and those afraid of discomfort. This is a wonderful product, and should not be avoided due to apprehension. Give it time, and you'll discover it's an invaluable tool for your grooming needs.

5 out of 5 stars Great Product   September 7, 2010

I love this little gizmo. I don't even call it an epilator- I call it my waxing machine. I'll be honest here, I bought this for weekly brazilian bikini waxes at a much much more reasonable price than the salon can offer. Be careful! This thing is powerful! If you're gonna use it down there make sure you've already been to the salon two or three times so the roots won't be so thick. I've started using it on my legs and it works really well. It's great having nice waxed underarms all the time too. Remember to be patient! All these women are right- first time is the worst. This is the only epilator I own and I look forward to never having to buy another. If your unsure of which model to get- go with this! Only con is this thing is a little loud but whatever. Doesn't bother me especially with the amazing results!

NOTE:: Buy rubbing alcohol and clean as directed! Sometimes when a hair gets yanked out the pore will bleed a tiny bit and that's going to get on the tweezer head.

5 out of 5 stars Great tool   September 5, 2010

Great epilator. I've had one for over a year and it still works great. Easy to clean and use. A bit loud but I don't see a way around that.

5 out of 5 stars Love it   September 5, 2010
A. Louden (Ventura, CA United States)
Lots have said how much they love this, and I'm just echoing that. This is my first epilator, and I was expecting it to hurt more, but it's definitely bearable. Yes, some places hurt worse than others (I did try my underarms the other day, and I couldn't do it). The bikini area hurts too, but I can handle it.
Mostly, I just think this thing is so neat. The light is great, and I like the option of the different heads and speeds.
I wish I would've bought this years ago.
